Things You Should Know Before Visiting Japan

Before Your Flight

Pack light! If you don’t plan on buying many souvenirs, a carry-on and backpack should be enough. Navigating Japan’s metro stations involves a lot of walking and stairs, so lugging around heavy bags can be a hassle. However, if you intend to shop, consider bringing an empty suitcase. Some airports offer same-day luggage delivery through Yamato Transport, which is most convenient for hotel stays rather than Airbnbs. Alternatively, you can arrange to have your luggage delivered to a nearby Family Mart, 7-Eleven, Poplar, or Daily Yamazaki for pickup using Yamato Transport. More details are available here: Yamato Transport.

Japan offers free Wi-Fi in many major city areas. If you rely on translator apps or Google Maps (highly recommended), you should get an international data plan, rent a pocket Wi-Fi (pricing and details here), or purchase an eSIM that works in Japan.

Booking Activities

Many attractions in Japan sell out quickly, so plan ahead! Make sure to book your must-do activities at least a month in advance. You can find tickets for experiences on platforms like Klook, Viator, GetYourGuide, or the official activity websites.

Popular experiences include:

  • TeamLab’s digital art museums

  • Samurai lessons

  • Street kart tours*

  • Traditional tea ceremonies

  • Food tours

  • Animal cafés

  • Anime and pop culture tours

*For the Tokyo street kart tour, an international driver’s permit is required. You can easily obtain one from a AAA office before your trip: AAA International Driver’s Permit.

If your plans fall through or you can’t secure reservations, exploring Japan’s many parks is a great alternative.

Language

You don’t need to speak Japanese to get around in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Many locals speak some English, and in places like Okinawa, where there is a large American military presence, navigating language barriers is even easier. Though English may be limited, many people are friendly and willing to assist-- often using translation apps or hand gestures. Learning basic Japanese phrases can enhance your experience and show respect for the local culture.

Visa Requirements

U.S. citizens can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days as tourists.

Money Matters

Japan is still a cash-heavy society. While large hotels and high-end restaurants accept credit cards, many small businesses, local restaurants, and public transportation require cash.

The easiest way to get cash is from ATMs in Japan, particularly at 7-Eleven and Family Mart stores, which are widely available and reliable.

Arriving in Japan

If flying into Tokyo, Haneda Airport (HND) is the more convenient option, located about 40 minutes by train from Tokyo Station. Narita Airport (NRT), on the other hand, requires approximately 1.5 hours of travel. Taxis are expensive, and traffic congestion can make public transportation a faster option. For more transport details, check: Haneda Airport Transportation.

Transportation

Ask your hotel which metro or train station is closest for easy navigation. Upon arrival at the airport, use Google Maps for the fastest public transportation routes. However, if your flight arrives late at night, keep in mind that most trains stop running after midnight.

Before Leaving the Airport

Get an IC card (such as Pasmo or Suica) for seamless metro and bus travel. These rechargeable prepaid cards eliminate the need for buying individual tickets, saving time and hassle. They can also be used for small purchases at vending machines and convenience stores.

IC cards are available as physical cards or can be added digitally to your smartphone via Apple Wallet or the Android equivalent.

While daily train passes exist, they are specific to certain networks and may not offer the best value unless you plan your routes carefully.
